Dr João Costa

PEPAYS Ireland was delighted to host  Dr. João Costa (above), Universidade Lusófona, Portugal recently as part of the Guest Lecture Series.

The title of João's presentation is "Curricular and Pedagogical Development of Physical Education in Portugal: An invitation for an international discussion"

Abstract: This presentation will introduce the Portuguese view of Physical Education, expressed in its mandatory curriculum, implemented in the beginning of the 1990’s, and subsequently refined and updated. The presentation starts by establishing the context in which Physical Education is currently developed, exploring three core themes: a) the founding principles of the syllabus, b) its curriculum structure, and c) the teaching possibilities it offers. For each theme, small illustrations will be provided. Deeper exploration of the third will provide examples of planning, teaching and assessment aligned to this view. In doing so, the presentation seeks to invite discussion based on the confrontation of scientific and practical experience the audience have been exposed to in delivering curriculum.

Prof Ann MacPhail, co-director of PEPAYS Ireland presents João with a momento of his visit to UL.
