PhD Studentships 2015 at DCU

School of Health and Human Performance

PhD Studentships

Applications are invited for positions of PhD research in the Childhood and Physical Activity research Cluster at the schools of Health and Human Performance, Dublin City University.

Childhood and Physical Activity (CPA) research cluster at DCU.

At present the gap between the recommended time children should spend being physically active and the reality is causing increasing problems in children's health. In order to deal with the increasing problem of physical inactivity researchers in DCU are continually seeking new ways to measure PA, motor skills proficiency, to investigate correlates of PA and using this knowledge to design and implement evidence based interventions. Research based in the CPA Cluster at DCU is multidisciplinary in nature and current initiatives include:

• The Y-‐PATH (Youth-‐Physical Activity Towards Health) programme,
• The CSPPA+ study (Children’s Sport Participation and Physical Activity Study),
• The SASSI project (Student Activity and Sport Study of Ireland),
• The MedEx programme,
• The investigation of the influence of obesity on motor control.

The expectation would be that you would complete a postgraduate research qualification (a Ph.D.) in an area outlined above on a full-time basis and within an acceptable timeframe. You would also be expected to contribute to the teaching and administration of the undergraduate degree programmes in Health and Human Performance. These are the B.Sc. in Physical Education, the B.Sc.in Sport Science and Health and the B.Sc. in Athletic Therapy and Training.

You will become part of the Childhood and Physical Activity research cluster and will have the full support and access to the School of Health and Human Performance resources and postgraduate laboratories.

The School of Health and Human Performance is committed to the all round academic and professional development of our research students. You would also need to be able to demonstrate your ability to work independently with support of a teaching or research supervisor and the enthusiasm to contribute to a stimulating teaching and research environment.
